Close the Circus and kick out the Clowns

Politics and campaigns, no one hears truth in all the clamor and discord. Nothing meaningful is communicated, just sound bites bought from campaign strategists for high dollars. Talking heads spewing empty words that do nothing but pit tax paying citizens against each other. It means nothing and we get nothing.

Those who spend high dollars to make all this happen pull strings to get what they want and the average working citizen is left in the cold. We are all slaves to corporate America even those that don't work in corporate America because their lobbyists control our government. We pay the taxes that give them bailouts and breaks. Sounds like a very raw deal to me.


Stop all the spending on lobbyists and ads. Make the candidates speak for themselves, in their own words. Publish resumes to tell what they have done and plans for what they will do for the good of this country if elected. Set public debates and post them online. And for those in office, publish their votes and the bills they design in every public library. We are flooded with information, but not in meaningful ways. Make it simple and clean and available to everyone.


We elect candidates now in the midst of so much subterfuge; they dodge and the dance and spout memorized lines. You don't get real jobs this way, why should we elect them based on only smoke, mirrors and emotion? It's a job, treat it like a job and produce results for the ones that pay the salary...that would be you and me.


Stop the commotion, get real. It's real when they take the taxes out of my paycheck. It's real when they deal with the communist government of China to borrow almost half of all that they spend and deepen the debt for our children and grandchildren. The national debt is very real. They need to be real with all of us.


Our elected officials need to stand for goodness and truth not Halliburton and Exxon. There is nothing we cannot accomplish in this great country with all of the resources we have, except for the greed that steals it all away. We need to quit standing for the pitiful performance of our elected officials and throw them out when they don't act for the good of the country. Close down the circus and kick out the clowns.

Dear Mr. President...a beautifully written appeal by a constituent and supporter

Dear President Obama,

I am writing this realizing that it will, undoubtedly, never be read by you, but, hopefully it will be a cathartic exercise for me. Even though my words may never reach you, I will know that, at the very least, I have spoken my piece and weighed in with my opinion.

Yes, Mr. President, I voted for you. I donated to your campaign even though times were tough and money was tight. I worked a phone bank on your behalf, knocked on doors, and engaged in many internet activities to help you get elected.

As you spoke in Grant Park on the night of that victorious moment, I stood in absolute awe of you and of my country. As the tears streamed down my cheeks, I danced with a sense of excitement and hope - something I had not felt in a very long time. You were my hero and you were going to make things better - I just knew it.

What happened, Mr. President? Why do we no longer feel that excitement or that hope? Why did you allow that feeling of energy and renewal to die, both in your constituents and in yourself? Honestly, I feel as if someone kicked me in the gut and I can't breathe. It's beyond mere disappointment - it's that feeling of betrayal - betrayal committed by your closest friend…your mother…or your father.

You know, I realize that in the last two years you have experienced the most outrageous obstructionist Congress in our history. I realize that the job you were elected to do has met with serious pitfalls and obstacles. I realize that many of your hopes for the recovery of this country have been dashed and decimated by the opposition.

But, Mr. President, do you realize that those who oppose you so vehemently do so not because of the policies and legislation you want, but because they truly hate you with all the fervor they possess? And, do you realize that they will continue their campaign of hate throughout your term in office no matter how many compromises you make or how many attempts you engage in to placate and accommodate them? Do you realize that Mr. President?

In my lifetime, I have witnessed that kind of hatred, Mr. President, and it was the ugliest of all things ever experienced. To watch this being played out at the peril of an entire nation and a people is devastating. In my lifetime I have watched - not at all silently - as attempts were made to thwart and subjugate any progress made by anyone of color. I have been witness to the oppression and despotism that trammeled all hope and initiative for a better future - a better tomorrow. It took decades to overcome, and we're still working on it. What is currently happening in Washington is just another manifestation of racism and bigotry - and the fear of white people losing power. You do realize that, don't you?

That kind of hatred cannot be legislated out of existence, and no amount of compromise, concession, or accommodation will ameliorate it. The only way to deal with this is to defeat it. The bullies have bloodied your nose - now you have to fight. You have to stand up for what you know is right for you and for this country.

Yes, Mr. President, you can do that - we can do that. But…you have to gather your base - those who have your back. You have to stop alienating your people - those who pledged their allegiance to you through their votes. You must lead with resolve and with determination and without capitulation to the bullies.

No more watered down legislation to appease your enemies. No more buckling demands. No more caving in to tranquilize the radical right. It won't be easy, but this is a fight that we must win.

Yes, Mr. President, yes we can. You have an army at your disposal - all of those millions who cast their votes and signaled that they wanted you to be the change they wanted to see in the world. We still want that change. And, with the right tenor, you could invigorate and deploy that army on your behalf. It means picking yourself up, dusting yourself off, and looking the bully in the eye. It means being mad as hell and deciding that you aren't going to take this anymore. It means having the courage of your convictions and having the guts to say no to those who would destroy us to further their agendas of hate.

If you don't do these things, Mr. President, this country will fail and the blame will rest squarely on your shoulders. This is not the time to cow-tow or to bend over. This is not the time to give away the store or surrender to the oppressor. This is not the time to succumb to manipulation or brow-beating. This is the time to reject the noise of those on the right. This is the time to overpower hate. This is the defining moment, Mr. President.

As we move into a new year, the extremes on the right who permeate our government are hell-bent on seeing to it that you fail. That's their objective…that's their sole purpose for being. That's what the plan has been all along. For you, and for all of America, you must not fail.

If you can reach deep enough and if you have the courage, we can create a better tomorrow. One that dawns on an America that cares for her people. One that assures that no child ever has to go to bed hungry and that no family has to seek shelter in an abandoned car. An America that provides, not just adequate, but the best health-care for ALL her people. A country that values equal rights and human rights across the globe.

Yes, Mr. President, with fortitude and perseverance, we can achieve peace. We can bring our men and women home from the battlefields of unjust and unrighteous wars and can assure the world that we are no longer an insane entity that chooses to annihilate innocent men and women for our own selfish desires. We can break the stranglehold of corporations and corrupt bankers and become a nation that values its' workers and its' citizens.

It will be a dog-fight, Mr. President, but if you refuse to give in, you can build an America that puts people back to work, assures them that their homes are secure, and that their children will be fed and clothed. You can build an America that assures quality public education and assures that every child can attend a university. You can do that…but, only if you will stand and fight and not turn tail and run.

Yes, we can do all of that. And, while we're at it, we can close Gitmo and demonstrate to the world that torture and inhumane treatment of people will no longer be tolerated. We can pass the DREAM Act. We can end Don't Ask Don't Tell. We can end the oppressive laws that dictate who a person can choose to spend the rest of their lives with. Together, we can make America into the truly free country that it purports to be.

The possibilities are endless, Mr. President. But, the timing is not. It has to be NOW. This is the reality. All of these things and more are feasible, but only if you will lead…only if you will be on the front row as we stare down the bullies…only if you will refuse to settle for anything less.

The Religious Right, Methodists, Nancy Pelosi, and Glenn Beck: God Bless America!

A stated goal of leaders in the religious right is the destruction of an enemy - secular humanism, and they have determined that secular humanists are in control of the United States and that they are indeed evil. 

I believe they have identified Nancy Pelosi as the high priestess of secular humanism having succeeded Hillary Clinton. And their other enemy is the cult religions. A cult religion is any religion in disagreement to their strict definition of Christianity. They believe that destroying our government through revolution will in fact allow them to gain control of it and restructure it into a theocratic form. And any of the cult religions would not fare well either.

If you read the current writings of this movement, you will find that they are indeed actually "Christianizing" the concept of revolution. They are bringing the founding fathers into the realm of Christian sainthood and laying the groundwork for aggressive political action to redeem our nation. This movement has been building since the 1950's ever creeping into the mindset of fundamentalist Christianity. It has been termed by some as Dominionism and by others as Reconstructionism or Theonomy. At some future time, if things go really awry, it may become deemed as the 21st century Crusades.

Revolution is the ultimate lack of diplomacy. Revolution incited by the right wing would be the antithesis of the Christian principles which they claim to uphold. They are following a new gospel of their own creation which does not preach salvation for all by the blood of Christ but salvation of a few by dominion over the many. They have moved from evangelizing the true gospel to save individual souls (John 3:16 - 17) to a politicized gospel that would bring down a sledge hammer on those who do not fit their mold of belief. One likes to think that our enlightened society is beyond this.

And the overriding question I have is, which of the hundreds of Christian denominations would be in charge? And secondly, how would those not in charge behave? Would there be counter-revolutions or would they some how work this out in Nicene Council fashion? The fact that there are hundreds of Christian sects begs the question of how a Christian theocracy could ever be established in this country.

As for me, I definitely think the Methodists should be in charge. Wait, we must be already because we believe in a SOCIAL gospel that supports the dignity of all individuals, feeding the hungry, visiting the sick and assisting the poor. We must be the root of the evil empire.

Well, at least the religious right has that Mormon Glenn Beck on their side. Oh wait, the religious right considers Mormonism to be a cult. What now? And has anyone told Mitt Romney this?

The problem with a trumped-up movement like the Tea Party is that followers get so caught up in belonging to the movement they even act against their own best interests. Consider that the biggest financial backers of the Tea Party are the Koch family and then maybe question how this is truly a "grassroots movement of average Americans."

Others could not explain the contradiction. “That’s a conundrum, isn’t it?” asked Jodine White, 62, of Rocklin, Calif. “I don’t know what to say. Maybe I don’t want smaller government. I guess I want smaller government and my Social Security.” She added, “I didn’t look at it from the perspective of losing things I need. I think I’ve changed my mind.”

“What a difference 235 years makes in American history. The threat to life and liberty has come full circle. Like then, the American people love life and liberty and hate arbitrary abuse of power. Then, like now, powerful leaders stirred up the people to realize they must be vigilant to defend their freedom. There has not been a day in the presidency of Barack Obama in which the people have been free of strife and discord. The Declaration of Independence says that the people are willing to suffer many abuses, but there comes a time when it is their right – it is their duty – to push back. That time is now. The people must channel their anger through nonviolent means to change the leadership and the direction of America.”

I remember the pastor of my childhood encouraging patriotism by showing respect for our leaders. The lack of respect being shown to President Obama by "people of faith" is shocking. The flock is led like sheep to the house of slaughter, never minding where the path may take them. Never thinking for themselves and being continually scared of by the inventions of imaginary demons by those who lead them. How can so many fall for one "conspiracy" after another? 

Taking a 50-mile step back to look at our country, it is my humble opinion that the "right-wing" movement in our country would be an enticing target for outside enemies to infiltrate and use for their own ends to cause turmoil and downfall. Why do I say this? Because they so easily fall for every imagined threat put before them by Limbaugh, Beck, and the parade of sardonic talking heads on Fox News Network. Because they have been used by corporate entities to fight political battles. Because they have been used by the Republican leadership for years to fuel their party's cause until "Surprise!", the right wing took the party over. Now the powers that be in the "old guard" Republican halls are holding the reigns of a wild stallion which may very well drive their cart over a precipice. I pray they don't take our blessed USA with them. 

The Tea Party Patriots are monitoring military movements as "unusual" because they fear their own country's military. And why? Why is this fear so great?

And then there is this project of the Liberty Counsel to "adopt a liberal" to pray for them. Now that sounds so nice. Until you read the comments about the liberals they suggest for adoption. It sounds more like one of their "voter information card hitlists" than a prayer list. 

In less friendly terms, Renew America is calling for resistance by the states.
"The American people are overwhelmingly opposed to the implementation of MussoliniCare. It is heavy-handed and repressive and is a worse form of oppression than any the Crown imposed on the Colonies in the 1770s."

Here is an excellent post written in 2004 by Joe Badgeant that puts this issue in a nutshell of why we should take note and care about the rising tide of revolution-speak, for those who have never spent time in a fundamentalist, dominionist congregation will have a hard time believing that rational Midwest Americans could actually think this way. Healthcare Reform Side Effect: Rush Limbaugh Promises to Leave USA

 




In health care, many things can have side effects; some healthy and some risky. 
The passage of the health care reform act has proven to have at least one positive side effect. 
Rush Limbaugh promised, vowed or otherwise loudly stated that he would leave the USA if the reform passed.
Well Rush, the bill passed. Now what are you going to do?
At least two Face Book pages have already gone up encouraging people to support Rush in his vow of conscience.

The Big Ugly of the Week - Glenn Beck: Spanked and then Punched

The Big Ugly of the week goes to Glenn Beck for a message he is encouraging for free distribution through his Face Book page: Glen Beck: Spanked then Punched 

Although I appreciate that he is calling his flock of devotees to be a people of peace, he wins the Big Ugly award for claiming that Liberals NEED the Right to be violent bomb throwers and are therefore inciting the Right Wing to violence.

Come on Glenn, we have Democratic congressmen retiring because of the ridiculous stalemate caused by Republicans who don't understand diplomacy and negotiation. Teapartiers spit on Congressman Emmanuel Cleaver and called other African-American Representatives the "N" word. Who needs that?

What we need in this country is a government of the people, by the people, for the people. Since the people are not homogeneous, that means to achieve the best interests of the people there has to be civil discourse along with some sensible give and take.

Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for the New Year!

With all the busy times of the holidays I have not been posting. Here is a poignant video for the holidays. Enjoy. My best and I really mean this, best wishes for a happy new year for us one and all.

OK, now that we have gotten holiday cheer out of the way...ahem...back to the purpose of this site. Here is a doosey for you to start of the new year with: Laura's Psychology Blog.  I found this post when I was searching on the phrase "internal locus of happiness." I have never read this blog before and I don't know anything about Laura except that if you think Republicans are the happiest people on earth you just might be radically right ugly. She is reporting on a study done by the Pew Research Center which has found after surveying 2,260 people that reportedly Republicans are much happier than Democrats. 

So is Laura Republican or Democrat? I have no idea. Does she uphold the survey? Not sure. Were the 2,260 people surveyed actually a fair representation of the American public? I just don't know and I have my doubts. What I do know without a doubt is that I am much happier today as a Democrat than I was prior to 1996 when I was a Republican. I am also more prosperous. The Pew study found Republicans were more wealthy. My income has quadrupled since I became a Democrat. Does one have a tie to the other? I think it has more to do with the fact that I completed a college degree in computer information systems and am working in my field of study. Maybe I am just not a typical Democrat. I am a happily married heterosexual with children and our combined household income is in the top level for my county. I am a person of faith albeit a Methodist which means that social justice is important to me as opposed to what I perceive of the religious right's belief that God helps those that help themselves. 

I recall my college statistics professor telling us that statistics never lie but that statisticians do. The point is that you can make a poll provide support for whatever view you prefer. The fact that this poll would have any authority when the respondents represent 1/10000 of the population is something I cannot take stock in. That is like taking 2 people out of a crowd of 20,000, one being a democrat and one being a republican and judging from their responses to a set of questions who was happiest then extrapolating that to the rest of the US citizenry.

Rants from the Right: Did Barack Obama Buy the Election?

Now that the voice of the people has been heard in the presidential elections it is time for that age-old tradition of sour grapes. All of the negative rhetoric of the McRage campaign is being vomited out in bitter rants and accusations. John McCain's very gracious and eloquent speech the night of the election did nothing to expunge the bitterness caused by all of his outrageous and desperate negative campaigning.

People are lamenting the divisiveness caused by the election. What has to be recognized is that it was not the election but the desperate actions of John McCain and of many leaders of the radically right that spewed endless hatred to advance their personal causes that has brought about and is salting the wounds in our nation. As the adage goes, "Those who live by the sword, die by the sword." Using a toxic message has poisoned the McCain election and may prove to be just as deadly to the many right-wing organizations that have published and preached the same bitterness.

Christianity the most positive message in the universe has once again been hijacked for the personal gain of certain people and their organizations. To take the threat of hellfire and brimstone to the voting ballot and tell a congregation or a supporter base that their eternal fate is at risk by how they mark the box for president is wrong, especially so when it is laced by out-right lies and venomous hate.

Get ready for all the rants from the "Right" or as a friend of mine likes to say "from the religious Wrong." Here is one such example in an interesting discussion board on SodaHead , asking the question "Did Barack Obama Buy the Election?"

My response: "Obama didn't win because of money or because of his race. He won because of his superior ideas and goals. He won because he struck a cord with the people of this country who want to see positive change. Our image in the eyes of the world has been sullied by the actions of the Bush administration. The Bush doctrine (IWRC) of pre-emptive war has caused vast mistrust of this country. We need a leader who can rebuild our image and once again put us in a position of respect not because we can drop more bombs but because we have a president who knows how to lead with diplomacy."

I confirm that I am a happy supporter of my President, Barack Obama.

Do the Radically Right Own God???

Would the radically right stand for the thought that God just might be liberal?

One thing that stands out clearly in the 2008 Presidential election cycle is that the radically right believe deeply that they are the "true" Americans and also the "true" Christians." Sarah Palin told a crowd that she was happy to be speaking to a part of the country where "pro-Americans" lived. This implies that she must have been places in the US where "anti-Americans" live?

The religious radical right person believes that anyone who is not a part of their belief circle could not be a true Christian or a true American. They believe that anyone outside of their circle is a threat to the American/Christian way of life. And they do believe that the American way of life is definitely Christian. Their leaders in PAC groups and church groups tell them this again and again as they incite a mounting fear that has these people digging deep into their pockets to fork out hard-earned cash to these very PAC's and church groups. They must do so to ensure their freedom and their very way of life. If they do not, then those dirty, nasty, godless, child-eating LIBERALS will take away all their Bibles and guns and line them up in a train station to ship them off to a labor camp ready and waiting for all good right-wing Christians. So dig deep and give, give, give.

If you take the time to view some of the sites I have in my "Reading from Left to Right" section on this site you will find that LIBERAL is the vilest word in the right-wing lexicon. When anything goes wrong in their world, the LIBERALS are behind it. If they could pin Hurricane Katrina on the LIBERALS I am sure they would do so. After all, it must have been whipped up to make "W" look bad.

I recall that a member of James Dobson's staff was calling for torrential rain to fall on the last night of the Democratic convention. As it turned out, it was a beautiful starry night. However, the Republican Convention was greeted with a hurricane. Interesting if you believe that God is tossing these storms in judgement.

More of this is what I expect we will be seeing from the "right" wing:

What the Bible says about government and which also was written during Roman rule a government which was not a Christian theocracy:

Romans 13:1 (Whole Chapter) [ Be Subject to Government ] Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.

A must read article from Cal Thomas: Religious Right R.I.P. This article embodies what I believe as a born again Christian who came to Jesus in the Jesus People revival of the 1970's. I have been so disheartend by the politization of the Church. I have hope renewed by this article from Cal Thomas. The Church needs to wake up and realize that politics is not a savior. The people of God have to live their beliefs from the heart each and every day and not think that getting in the muck and mire of politics is going to change anything. The country will only change in a positive way if the citizens walk and talk their faith rather than trying to legislate it.

I have been waiting for a Christian of stature to say this for years!!! Thank you, Mr. Thomas.

It is time to stop fear-mongering and start walking in faith and in the steps of our Lord Jesus. As Christians we have the most radical change program in the universe and it doesn't rely on any politics but on God's boundless love.

We Christians must stop hating our neighbors... even if they are "gaybors" and realize God did not call us to judge but to love our neighbors as ourselves. This is exactly what Jesus taught without hesitation. Love wins out over all other actions. If not, then the work on the cross is ineffective.

God will never condemn you for sharing His love with everyone. We don't need religion in politics. What we need is the love of God shed abroad in the hearts of politicians. And of course, in the hearts of all people.

Jesus was a true Radical. His way of thinking and living was counter to all norms. He changed the world without employing politicians to do his work. He changed the hearts of people with God's love. He walked it, he talked it, he died for it, and he rose again so that we might live in the love of God. The Spirit of God descended on the disciples on Pentecost not with a torch to consume sinners and blast them from the planet, but with a flame to burn the chains of sin from their souls so that they could sing God's praises from a clean heart. And to empower them to take the message of God's love so that the chains of sin would be broken in all the world. God's love is not for an elite group. It is for all people.

If every church would make a vow to keep politics and voter coercion away from their pulpit and instead teach their flocks to love as God loves then the politics of this nation would be transformed without the help of even one religious political action committee. That's the revolution we need...the one where the people of God share his Love with everyone they meet. Our Christian faith was never meant to be a political base, but a base for the kingdom of the true living God.

Post Election Tensions

Exuberant after the election, I returned home from my Congressman's victory watch party and found that there were several op-ed pieces already published online. Being inspired I wrote my own post about the election.

And then I shared the following in a email to my co-workers:

Two hundred and thirty-two years after Thomas Jefferson penned the words
within the Declaration of Independence, "We hold these truths to be
self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their
Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and
the pursuit of Happiness", we have elected an African-American as the 44th POTUS
all the while many asked if our nation was ready for such a thing. So deeply run
the scars of our inhumanity towards each other caused by slavery and the lack of
respect for life that this injustice has wrought, we still today have to ask if
we are ready for a black man to be president. Maybe it is fitting that this man,
son of a white woman from Kansas "the Free State" in the heart of America and a
black man from the distant shores of Kenya in the continent from which slaves
were brought to this land, should unite us in the understanding that all people
are indeed created equal. The blood of both races flows through his veins. How
symbolic, how right, how just is it that Barack Hussein Obama II should be the
first black man to stand in the office of President of the United States
signaling the final breaking down of the wall caused by the injustice of
slavery.

Many will still ask this question and we may see difficult times in
future days as our nation absorbs the significance of this election. It is my
prayer that we as a nation and as individuals live out the words Thomas
Jefferson was so ardent to add to the Declaration and that we embody the
sentiment, "We hold these truths to be self-evident..." Our nation is a beacon
set upon a hill and the eyes of the world are upon us. May the "someday that we
shall overcome" be this very one.

And in the spirit of his campaign the people answered, "YES WE
CAN!"

I received many thankful and complementary emails but was also reported to HR and had to have a discussion with my manager.

I had been low-key at work about the election except for a single campaign button on my purse. We have a casual dress code and yesterday I was wearing an Obama campaign t-shirt I received for walking neighborhoods in Missouri to help get out the vote. I figured the election was over so this couldn't be seen as political campaigning. And I had brought in a poster of my president which I had also just pinned up in my cube. I admit that my computer wallpaper and screen-saver had screen shots from the Obama campaign site. After the conversation, of my own choice and not the suggestion of my manager, I put on a sweater and buttoned it up to conceal my Obama t-shirt, I removed my computer wallpaper and screen saver, removed my campaign button and I sadly took down the poster of my president. I felt truly sorry that my comments had caused offense.

I didn't think at the time that I wrote my comments that they would be offensive, but that rather I was pointing out the historic significance of the election outcome. I should not have sent it realizing that McCain supporters would have been very disappointed. That was something I overlooked in my excitement over this historic event and I do feel bad about that.

However it was brought up to my attention that the complaint had to do with someone who was very religious and that I should understand how deeply religious people would feel about my comments and the election outcome.

The sad thing, is that at that moment in the conversation, I did totally understand since I had previously read James Dobson's letter from 2012. It was not until this morning that it hit me that my email had nothing to do with religion. This was a bogus argument. I could be called up for sending a message over company email about politics and that would be fair, although I was not campaigning and the election results were in and I was speaking about our president-elect in terms of the historical significance of his election. I said nothing about John McCain at all and did not offer Barack Obama as the better candidate.

I myself am a deeply religious person. Of course that is irrelevant to the conversation except that was a reason given for my email being offensive, that a deeply religious person found it so. The stretch would be to say this comment of mine brought religion into discussion, "It is my prayer that we as a nation and as individuals live out the words Thomas Jefferson was so ardent to add to the Declaration and that we embody the sentiment, "We hold these truths to be self-evident..." Our nation is a beacon set upon a hill and the eyes of the world are upon us. May the "someday that we shall overcome" be this very one."

In any case, I am repentant for causing offense to any of my co-workers. I am also deeply grieved that the religious leaders of our nation have so vilified my president to the extent that many in our nation are afraid of their future under his leadership. That is the deepest offense of all.

The President of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama II!

New York Times, Thomas L. Friedman: And so it came to pass that on Nov. 4, 2008, shortly after 11 p.m. Eastern time, the American Civil War ended, as a black man — Barack Hussein Obama — won enough electoral votes to become president of the United States.

A civil war that, in many ways, began at Bull Run, Virginia, on July 21, 1861, ended 147 years later via a ballot box in the very same state. For nothing more symbolically illustrated the final chapter of America’s Civil War than the fact that the Commonwealth of Virginia — the state that once exalted slavery and whose secession from the Union in 1861 gave the Confederacy both strategic weight and its commanding general — voted Democratic, thus assuring that Barack Obama would become the 44th president of the United States. - Read more...

Slavery began in Virginia soon after the English colonists first settled in America around 1607 and lasted until the ratification of the thirteenth amendment to the US Constitution in 1865. Slavery was seen by many to be abhorrent as far back as the writing of the Constitution of the United States. That it was not abolished at that time, in a sad twist of fate which has caused much sorrow within our nation and has kept us from being truly great. In spite of the sentiment shared by many and expressed in Thomas Jefferson's words, acknowledging that "all men are created equal" slavery persisted as a compromise in hopes of forging a stronger union able to withstand the coming war for independence from England. And yet, after the war for Independence was fought and won, slavery persisted for nearly 100 years more.

President Lincoln, in his campaign of 1860, challenged this compromise and campaigned against the expansion of slavery. His electoral victory was followed by seven Southern states declaring succession from the Union. The bitter war that ensued between the States, the deadliest in American history taking the lives of over 620,000 soldiers and an undetermined number of civilians, ended in 1865 bringing the official end of slavery in the United States. However it did not end the inhumanity that resulted from slavery and was followed by the Reconstruction of the South and then the hateful "Jim Crow" years. Inequality and injustice remained the written law of the land for nearly 100 years more. Changing the slavery laws of the land at the close of the civil war did not change the hearts of the people.

This unsettled issue of racial equility bore fruit to the civil-rights movement initiated with 1954 Supreme Court case of Brown v. the Board of Education. The struggles born out of the duplicity of our beliefs and our refusal to live out the "truths" we "hold to be self-evident" violated our national conscience and the nation could not rest as long as we enslaved any of our citizens in the bonds of inequality. The unrest of the civil-rights movement strained our nation again to it's limits. The sorrows of that era included the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert Kennedy, and the Reverend Martin Luther King. Many brave men and women, black and white, fought the predominance of discrimination at the risk of their very lives. Many strides toward equality were made through dedicated efforts.
